Dr Louise Byass

IP Exploitation Manager

Dr Louise Byass is responsible for overseeing development and protection of Fera’s intellectual assets, and managing the resulting intellectual property (IP) portfolio. She is closely involved with commercialisation of IP via licensing, new service development etc. As well as managing IP within Fera, Dr Byass has extensive experience of managing IP in collaborative grant-funded projects and work undertaken on behalf of commercial customers.

Dr Byass has worked in IP management and commercialisation for 15 years, prior to which she was a molecular biologist with a specific interest in low temperature tolerance in plants. Dr Byass has a DPhil from the University of York, which was followed by a Post Doctoral Fellowship at the University of Alberta in Canada. She also has a Certificate in Patent Administration.

During her scientific career, Dr Byass has been a co-author on a number of scientific peer-reviewed scientific papers, and an inventor on three patent applications. Dr Byass is regularly involved in teaching IP as part of bioenterprise modules at Universities in the region, for both undergraduate and postgraduate students, and has written an invited book chapter on IP in a text book on enterprise for life scientists. Dr Byass is also part of the STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) Ambassador programme in the region.
