Julian Smith

International Development including sustainable agriculture, plant pests and diseases

Julian Smith is with over 20 years of experience in agriculture and crop health, focused on developing countries and in forging partnerships between north and south institutions. Trained as a plant bacteriologist and molecular biologist, he has worked with crops as varied as potato to banana to coconut and cassava, and in countries of East Africa, South America and Asia. A particular interest has been in promoting investment with developing countries in addressing the threat of crop pest and disease epidemics, and building early outbreak response capabilities - that build towards a one-world outcome for food security.

Currently Julian works for Fera Science Ltd, a lead organization for sustainable agriculture and food safety, which works with governments, academia and industry across the food chain. Fera is the main evidence provider to the UK government on agriculture and retains one the largest critical mass of agricultural and regulatory expertise in the UK. At Fera Julian has primary responsibility for development and oversight of Fera’s activity in overseas countries, notably in Africa and Middle East, and in areas of plant health. In his early career Julian did his PhD at Aberystwyth University and worked with CAB international.
