Proficiency testing determines the performance of individual laboratories for specific measurements and is vital armoury when used to monitor laboratories' continuing performance. Another term often used is interlaboratory comparison. As this term implies, proficiency testing compares the measuring results obtained by different laboratories. In a proficiency test one or more specimens are despatched to a number of participating laboratories and then each laboratory measures the specimens according to a given set of instructions and reports its results back to us as we are the adminstrators of the scheme.
The results reported by each laboratory for a measurand are compared to the reference value for that measurand. We annually run over 4,000 proficiency testing schemes, serving more than 10,000 laboratories in over 120 countries. We produce in excess of 250,000 test materials, which are distributed to these 120 countries around the world. PT is often referred to as external quality assessment (EQA) and is a vital element in the laboratory accreditation process, alongside reference materials, as this enables laboratories to monitor the quality of their analytical results as stipulated in ISO/IEC 17025.
