Dioxins and PCBs in Food NRL

EU-RL Proficiency Tests (PT) and Interlaboratory Comparisons (ILC)

EU-RL Dioxins and PCBs in Feed and Food Proficiency Tests are organised and evaluated. Participants include NRLs and OCLs.

Previous PT results have been summarised and presented at the annual Dioxin Conference. Results have been published in Organohalogen Compounds and are available from

Cell based assays are sometimes used for monitoring compounds with dioxin-like toxicity. Samples still require careful and complex clean-up, and only an estimate of total toxicity is provided, not results for individual congeners. Samples found positive would normally be confirmed by GC-MS analysis.

Cell based assays need to meet strict EU criteria to be applied for official control and that it has been reported that not all commercial services using these methods meet these criteria - check carefully.
